Execution of Captain Henry Wirz

The noose is being placed around the neck of Henry Wirz just before he is executed. One of the priests was inquiring about his desire to confess. The soldiers at the base of the gallows were chanting, while the crowd jeered. He was the warden of the Andersonville prison camp and was sentenced to hang "for impairing the health and destroying the lives of prisoners." Wirz was the only Confederate officer executed as a war criminal.
