"Chinese Agitation in San Francisco - A Meeting of the Workingmen's Party on the Sand Lots"
On July 23, 1877, a mass meeting of workingmen in San Francisco, called to express sympathy for the Pittsburgh strikers, got out of hand and turned into a prolonged riot. Federal troops had been called in to break a strike in Pittsburgh, killing 19 strikers. Demonstrators displayed their prejudice against Chinese workers who worked for cheaper wages.
