Federal Naval Station at Mound City

View of the station and ships on the Mississippi River. When the station at Cairo, Illinois proved inadequate for the need of the river squadrons (since all repairs had to be made in the water), the depot at Mound City was created and there many ironclads were built and repairs made by a large squadron of shipwrights, mechanics, carpenters, and engineers.
