Amos T. Akerman (1821-1880) Akerman was appointed attorney general of the United States by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1870. He was the first attorney general to head the newly formed Justice Department. During his term in that office, Akerman fought to end the terrorism of the Ku Klux Klan.
