This photograph shows the first Union troops scaling the cliffs of Roper's Rock, at the north end of Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, TN, on November 25, 1863. On the day before, during "The Battle above the Clouds," the two Confederate brigades who held the mountain - on a plateau 1,100 feet above the river - descended to reinforce the troops engaged in the foggy battle below. On November 25th, amidst general confusion and against the wishes of a furious General Grant, Union volunteers assaulted the cliffs and several regiments reached the crest to find it empty. Corporal Roper, member of a Pennsylvania regiment, fell and was killed.
